Recently, I saw one of my favorite entertainers perform live: Rob Zombie as part of the Return of the Dreads Tour with Korn and In This Moment at DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, MI. It was the perfect show to wind down summer 2016 and get ready for fall.
My day-to-day look generally hides the fact that I'm grossly entertained by the art of Mr. Zombie, but let me assure you - I love to rock it when the time comes. I also love all things Halloween and savor every October day. I went to this show with my mom (seriously, she loved it) and it was a much needed mother-daughter date night. That day was a mess from the very beginning and we definitely needed to have some fun when all was said and done.
OUTFIT
I had my outfit planned for weeks: I wore a t-shirt dress that my best friend got me a year ago for my birthday that had Lilly Munster on the front. It was a cute little wink to Rob Zombie, as one of his biggest hits is "Dragula" which was the name of Grandpa Munster's car. Going to a rock show in 2016 means not trying too hard. It's much different than the rock shows of the late 80s and early 90s. I paired the dress with some ripped jeans as it was rainy all day and sure to cool down later in the night.
My main focus point for this night was my hair and makeup. It was a rainy day, so I had to make sure everything stayed put and would persevere against the elements.
HAIR
Prep:
Leave-in conditioner
If I use nothing else in my hair, I use a leave-in conditioner. It's basically spray-on vitamins for your hair. Whether I'm going to blow dry my hair or let it air dry, I always use leave-in conditioner. My go-to is Matrix Total Results Moisture Cure 2-Phase Treatment. It's a great boost of moisture to your locks. Just shake it up to mix the two phases and spray all over. In addition to the previously mentioned product, I also use Loma Leave-In Conditioner and Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Tri-Wheat Leave In Conditioner. I generally comb it through (I do this with just about everything) because my hair is so thick, it takes some work to get all my hair coated.
Volume
I love volume. LOVE IT. I'm obsessed with big 60s hair – Bardot style! My hair is naturally thick but I still use product to plump it up at the roots. For this look, I used two products: first, Not Your Mother's Plump For Joy Thickening Hair Lifter directly onto my roots at the crown and worked it in with my fingertips. Second, I worked Tigi Bead Head Superstar Blowdry Lotion into my roots. Just because it says "blow dry lotion" doesn't mean you have to use a blow dryer with it. I worked everything through with a wide toothed comb and went to bed with it damp.
Styling:
When I woke up that morning, my hair was mildly wavy with a healthy amount of volume at the roots. I sectioned my hair in half and got to work on the bottom half first. I used Paul Mitchell Express Style Hot Off The Press to protect my strands from my curling wand. I use a 32mm wand on my hair for bigger waves. I did an entire section before spritzing with hairspray. For this look, I used Sexy Healthy Hair Soy Touchable Weightless Hairspray for a softer hold while I worked on the top sections. To finish the look completely, and because it had started to rain, I topped it off with Big Sexy Hair Spray & Play Volumizing Hairspray before heading out. I also had a can on the ready in the car for when I got to the venue – I flipped my head over and spritzed Not Your Mother's She's A Tease Volumizing Hairspray on my roots.
That's all it took for this look: a lot of volumizing products to control the volume I already have AND some damn good hairspray to fight the humidity.
MAKEUP
My makeup was simple, but oh-so-important: just some pitch black mascara and eyeliner paired with blood-red lips. Ta-da!
